Lazy Sunday

Got up and out on the early side for a Sunday, especially considering I was out later than usual Saturday night.  Being an active mom of  two and a business owner, I don't usually go out and "party" on the weekends. But I had the chance to go to a bar in the (Culver) city and meet one of my favorite bloggers, Brittany Gibbons, and humorous erotica author Alice Clayton while they were out here in L.A. filming a TV Pilot called "Have Boobs Will Travel" fun right?  So I couldn't pass that up.

Still got in my 2 hour/10 miler with the help of the new e+ energy shot and Want More Energy drink.  Stretched then had the French Vanilla Shake and 1/2 a banana. I love the natural energy and nutrition that Isagenix gives me on my runs.  I have been trying to utilize the product like serious athletes use them to improve my personal performance.  Hopefully I'll see results by way of a PR at the Surf City Half Marathon on Superbowl Sunday morning!

Lunch was a Morningstar Farms Veggie Patty burger on my homemade whole wheat bread with Dijon, Swiss, avocado, lettuce and tomato and a handful of baby carrots. YUM
I was lucky to get accepted as a BzzAgent and received a coupon to try one of Morningstar Farms products for free.  I love having quick easy lunch items onhand as I work from home and preparing healthy meals on a busy day can sometimes be challenging (I am NOT a lunchmeat on bread kind of gal)

I had made a big pot of soup for dinner so all we had to do was heat that up come dinnertime, and that was good as I needed some chill time to recover from my long run (and watch the NFL playoffs of course!)

Waste not, Want not

I recently started to save 'scraps'....the tops of celery and carrots, the green of the leek and fennel, the onion roots, etc.  I put it all in gallon freezer bags for stock.  I'm even guilty of letting the occasional veggie go limp and those get thrown in there as well.  Why you ask?  Stock!!!   I love homemade soup and it tastes even more amazing if you make your own stock.  I have done turkey (thanks for the Thanksgiving remains mom!) and veggie stock too. It just took me about 10 minutes to break up the remains of  our Christmas Eve turkey (was in the freezer) with some veg, an onion, couple cloves of garlic, peppercorns and a bay leaf.  It all went into the crockpot on low with several cups of HOT water and sometime between 12 and 24 hours from now I will have homemade stock for soup and other recipes.

Starting the day out right

Just got finished prepping one of my favorite new salad recipes Tuscan kale and shredded brussel sprouts with fresh toasted almonds, pecorino Romano and dried cherries. The homemade dressing consists of a shallot, a clove of garlic, fresh lemon juice, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper and olive oil. One of the best things about this salad is it gets better the longer it sits-it even tastes fantastic 4 days later, so I make a big huge bowl of it and eat healthy for days!
Another thing I like to do a few days a week in the morning is make a big pitcher of flavored water. I cut up a fresh lemon, grab a couple handfuls of fresh mint from my yard and put a little bit of fresh squeezed orange, grapefruit, or lemon juice along in with the water just to flavor it a little and then let it sit in the refrigerator and drink from it for a couple days refilling the water as needed. You can add other things you like such as fresh berries, or sliced cucumber makes it very delicious and refreshing like you're at a spa!

Long Run

Today's scheduled run was 9 miles. I planned to do in the afternoon once it warmed up a bit but when I woke up and started thinking about all the things I needed to do today I knew I better get my butt up and out the door ASAP. I usually fuel up with an Isalean shake and IsaGreens after taking an ounce of Ionix Supreme but after reading on the IsaAthletes page that most people do their shake post run I decided to have a banana and coffee (after my Ionix) and I brought water, Want More Energy and 2 packets of Island Boost in my fuel belt.
Lilly was so excited to go! I leashed her up and we headed out at 8:15. I wasn't sure on my route yet. I was considering dropping her off at the house after 5 miles then doing the rest solo, but at some point I decided on an out and back route. Her longest run with me prior to today was 8 miles but since it was so cool out this morning (I think it was still in the 30s!) I went the full 9 with her and she finished strong-actually we both could have kept going a fee more miles I think. I did my shake post run.
I'm feeling really good about Surf City in 3 weeks after such a strong run today. I didn't hydrate and fuel properly in Long Beach last October so mile 9 I hit a wall but I didn't feel even close to that today.

I am very excited about this year.  I ended my racing streak of 2012 with a bang (more like a muddy splash) by doing my first Spartan Sprint.  My first race of 2013 was the Xterra Boney Mountain 6K to kick off my goal of 13 races in 2013.  I have become passionate about nutrition and fitness over the past several years and will be sharing recipes, fitness info and my race experiences here to keep myself motivated and maybe inspire others to join me on my continuing journey in becoming my best self!
